Sylvania High School is located about 30 minutes south of downtown Sydney in a quiet bushland setting. The school has excellent public transportation links, and shopping centers and some of Sydney’s most beautiful surfing beaches, such as Cronulla Beach, are within easy reach.
Sylvania High School places particular emphasis on two areas: Technological and Applied Studies (TAS) and the Creative and Performing Arts.
The TAS program offers a wide range of practical, modern, and creative learning opportunities.
Students can work with a wide variety of materials, tools, and digital technologies, developing real problem-solving and design skills. Particularly impressive are the Tech Hub and Fabrication Lab, which are equipped with laser cutters, several 3D printers, and classic workshop equipment. Here, students create their own designs, prototypes, and finished products in courses such as Design & Technology, Industrial Technology, and Engineering. This is complemented by the multimedia lab, which is equipped with a green screen, professional audio/video technology, and high-quality editing software—ideal for film projects, graphic design, or digital storytelling.
Sylvania High School is equally strong in the creative and performing arts. Students are encouraged to discover their artistic interests and develop their talents in subjects such as drama, dance, photography, and visual design. The dance program is particularly outstanding and has made the school famous far beyond the region.
The modern dance studios are used intensively, and numerous dance clubs offer students of all grades the opportunity to gain technique, expression, and stage experience. The program offers a variety of experiences, from performances at school events to dance tours and festival visits to workshops or excursions to professional ensembles such as the Sydney Dance Company or the Bangarra Dance Theatre. The highlight of the year is the grand Sylvania High School CAPA Showcase, where the best works and performances are presented.
